About Atlantic Detailing

Who is Darren?

Atlantic Detailing was founded by Darren in 2003, following years of hands-on experience within the automotive industry.

After leaving school, Darren began a mechanics apprenticeship at college, where he developed an early interest in vehicle preparation while working within the valeting department. That quickly progressed into professional vehicle preparation, running a valeting centre by the age of 19.

He later worked with an independent car dealer preparing vehicles for sale, before moving into a role as an automotive glazier (windscreen specialist), achieving the title of Specialist Fitter — gaining further experience working with vehicle bodywork and glass.

After time spent working within a mobile valeting business, Darren established Atlantic Detailing with a focus on higher quality, more specialist vehicle care.

Over the years, both the industry and Darren’s approach have evolved. Today, Atlantic Detailing focuses on studio-based paint correction and ceramic coating installation using modern systems such as Wax Is Dead ceramic coatings.

Darren is also an approved and assessed member of the Professional Valeters & Detailers (PVD) association — a UK body that vets its members for experience, insurance and proven standards of workmanship. Not all detailers meet these standards.

Alongside his professional work, Darren has long been passionate about cars, with personal vehicles featured in magazines — reflecting a genuine enthusiasm for vehicle presentation that goes beyond day-to-day work.

More than just detailing

In 2023, while celebrating 20 years in business and hosting one of their popular Cars & Coffee events, Darren and his wife Caroline — with support from local businesses — organised a charity raffle, raising over £1,100 for Oscar’s Wish Foundation.

Paint Correction

What is paint correction?

Paint correction is the process of machine polishing vehicle paintwork to remove imperfections such as swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation and holograms.

Modern paint systems include a clear coat layer that can become damaged over time through poor washing techniques, environmental contamination and general use.

Using specialist polishing machines, compounds and lighting, paint correction carefully refines this surface to restore clarity, depth and gloss.

The result is a significantly improved finish, often transforming the appearance of the vehicle.

Do new cars need paint correction?

It’s a common assumption that new cars have perfect paintwork — but this is rarely the case.

Transport, dealership preparation and even factory processes can introduce light defects into the paint.

Paint correction allows these to be safely removed before applying any protection, ensuring the best possible finish from the start.

Ceramic Coatings

What is ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid protection system that bonds to the vehicle’s paintwork, forming a durable layer over the clear coat.

This provides long-term protection, enhanced gloss and improved resistance to dirt, water and environmental contamination.

One of the most noticeable effects is the hydrophobic behaviour — where water beads and runs off the surface — helping keep the vehicle cleaner for longer.

How long does ceramic coating last?

The lifespan depends on the product used and how the vehicle is maintained.

Professional coatings can last several years when applied correctly and cared for using proper washing methods.

Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?

Ceramic coating does not make paintwork scratch-proof.

However, it does add a protective layer that can help reduce minor wash marring and environmental damage when maintained correctly.

Its main benefits are:

  • improved gloss

  • easier maintenance

  • chemical resistance

  • long-term protection

Why does Atlantic Detailing use Wax Is Dead coatings?

Atlantic Detailing uses Wax Is Dead ceramic coatings as they represent modern coating technology with excellent durability, finish and performance.

Having worked with a wide range of systems over the years, Darren selects products based on proven results, not trends — ensuring customers receive reliable, long-term protection.

Who do you work with?

Atlantic Detailing works with all types of vehicles — not just prestige or high-end cars.

Whether you’re protecting a brand new daily driver or improving the finish of a long-term vehicle, every car receives the same level of care and attention.

The goal is simple: improve the appearance and protect the vehicle properly.

How should a ceramic coated car be washed?

To maintain both the coating and the paintwork, safe washing methods are essential.

Recommended practices include:

  • the two-bucket wash method

  • quality wash mitts and drying towels

  • pH neutral shampoo

  • avoiding automated car washes

Following these methods helps preserve both the coating and the finish.
